Curators of Miles: The Retrospective and We Want Miles Exhibits

Miles Davis: The Milieu

Presented by the Miles Davis Arts Festival

2021 marks three 20-year anniversaries of festivals and exhibitions devoted to the life, music and art of Miles Davis: The East St. Louis Miles Davis Arts Festival; the Drawings of Miles exhibition at the St. Louis Contemporary Art Museum; and MILES: A Miles Davis Restrospective exhibition at the Missouri History Museum. Also, Paris is joining us for the 10th anniversary of We Want Miles exhibit.

This is also Miles Davis’ 95th birthday. This historic roundtable panel discussion looks back at how these happenings explored the complex dimensions of Davis’ life through the prisms of his personal development, artistry, and cultural legacy.

Moderator Magdalene Linck takes us from Miles Davis’ roots in East St. Louis, to his reign as the Arch (Bebop) bishop of Jazz, to the Miles Davis futurism of today with panelists Ben Cawthra, curator of MILES: A Miles Davis Retrospective; Becki Hartke, designer and project manager of MILES; Davis’ nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr; and Vincent Bessières, curator at the Musée de la Musique/Cite de la Musique, which presented We Want Miles in 2010.
